RedRat FAQs - The RedRat3-II
Released in May 2008, this is an new, updated version of the RedRat3. Hopefully
the FAQ below will answer most of your questions, but please mail RedRat support
if you need further information.
– Why Develop a New RedRat3?
The original RedRat3 used several components that were no longer made, so were becoming
increasingly difficult to find. Also, some of these components were not available
in lead-free (RoHS compliant) form. As a result, we had to redesign the RedRat3
with new components.
– Are There Any Improvements With the New Design?
In terms of functionality, the RedRat3-II does exactly the same as the original
RedRat3 however it contains a faster microcontroller and more memory, so provides
the opportunity to add more features in the future.
– I Use RedRat Applications - Will They Continue To Work?
Yes, if you use more recent
application versions. We have sync'd the software version numbering, so all applications
with a version number of 2.20 or greater with work with both the original RedRat3
and the new RedRat3-II.
The RedRat3-II uses a different device driver, so changes
have been made to the SDK and applications to use this new device driver. This should
not be noticed when using RedRat applications.
– I Use the RedRat SDK - What Changes are Needed?
From version 2.20 onwards, the SDK now supports the RedRat3-II in addition
to all other RedRat devices (older RedRat3s and the irNetBox). When using the SDK
to list devices, the RedRat3-IIs are given as RedRatII-0, RedRatII-1 etc. Apart
from this, the RedRat SDK makes any other differences invisible to application software
based on the SDK.
– Is the RedRat3-II RoHS Compliant?
Yes, it uses all RoHS compliant (lead-free) components and so meets current European
regulations.
– Has the Price Changed?
The price for individual units and small quantities
has increased slightly but there is improved discounting for larger quantities.
